On March 21, ABB released "energy transformation equation" series of the first report —— water industry report (Chinese) pointed out that to achieve the United Nations water target, the global increase 8.56 billion cubic meters of wastewater treatment capacity and additional investment in the construction of 469 wastewater treatment facilities (equivalent to 3.4 million Olympic swimming pool).
The report also describes how automation and digital technologies can help wastewater treatment companies reduce their carbon emissions by up to 2,000 tons a year.
Data show that wastewater treatment requires a lot of energy, and the entire wastewater treatment industry consumes about 3 percent of the world's total energy output and produces more than 1.5 percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.
While improving wastewater treatment capacity is a priority, it is also critical to integrate technologies early to improve plant efficiency. ABB said its automation, electrification and digital solutions are helping to monitor, analyze and manage the operations of wastewater treatment plants. Combined with measurement and control solutions that collect and transmit large amounts of operational and diagnostic data, ABB systems are helping to optimize resource efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
The report shows that by better integrating automation and digital technologies, it can optimize wastewater use and relieve water supply pressure, and that wastewater treatment plants can reduce carbon emissions by up to 2,000 tons per year. Currently, more than 50,000 wastewater treatment plants around the world are expected to cut more than 100 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
